Custom-made or fabricated: where should you start?

A rug made to order

Begin with a design or collection and discuss the size, colors, fiber and construction options available for that particular piece. A custom-made rug is developed around the options supported by the selected design and production method.

A rug fabricated from carpet

Start with a suitable carpet design, then discuss cutting, shaping and edge finishing to create an area rug. Fabrication options depend on the carpet’s width, pattern repeat, construction and the dimensions you need.

1. Bring the room into the conversation.

Share a floor plan or room measurements, photographs from several angles, and the dimensions of the main furniture. Note doorways, walking routes, stair transitions and any areas that must remain clear. A sketch is a useful starting point; ask whether professional measuring is appropriate before confirming final dimensions.

2. Compare the materials in your setting.

Consider the room’s use, desired texture, pattern and the care requirements of the selected material. Tell us about pets, children, frequent visitors or other practical considerations. Review samples alongside upholstery, flooring and wall finishes where possible. Ask for the care instructions that apply to your chosen rug or carpet.

3. Consider the finished edge.

The edge is part of the design. Narrow or wide binding, serging and leather finishing can create different visual effects. Ask which options suit the material, shape and use of your rug. Our resizing and fabrication page introduces the finishes we can discuss with you.

4. Understand what affects the quotation.

Size, fiber, construction, customization, pattern placement and finishing all affect the project. For a fabricated rug, material width and pattern alignment can also affect the amount of carpet required. Ask the team to clarify the scope for rug pad, delivery, installation, freight and applicable tax so you can compare quotations on the same basis.

5. Plan around a confirmed timeline.

Timing varies by collection, size, construction and production schedule. An in-stock rug, a fabricated rug and a made-to-order design may follow different schedules. Confirm current availability and a project-specific estimate before placing an order. If your deadline is fixed, share it at the start and explore the Bonita Springs in-stock collection as another option.
